At Guilford, I have been able to dive head first into the world of medicine. I love the various degrees of medical professionals that are present in a medical office and how training and experience has allowed the staff to work as a team. I was able to have this amazing opportunity to mentor at this facility which has allowed me to grow in my learning in the field of healthcare.
I have been taught so many amazing skills that many students don't receive the chance to learn. I have learned to triage a patient by myself during which I take vitals, perform any necessary labs or tests that need to be done before the doctor sees the patient, and take histories of the patient to help evaluate their chief complaint. The vitals that I can assess of a patient include height, weight, pulse ox, temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, seeing capability (eye chart exam), and respirations. The common labs and tests that I have learned to perform include a strep test, influenza a & b, strep culture, urine analysis, urine culture, ear lavage, mono, h-pylori, x-rays, and hCG testing. I also help chart paperwork at the nurses' station.
